Painting the planets…

Every surface is being drawn from scratch, right here in your browser.

Welcome to the Solar System!

This map shows where the planets and dwarf planets really are today. Their positions are worked out from their true orbits, so it matches the real sky. Click any world to learn all about it β€” including every one of its moons.

Every world is turning on the spot, just like the real thing: giants such as Jupiter and Saturn whizz round, while slow Venus crawls β€” and goes backwards! The spins are hurried up so you can see them all move. The night side of each world faces away from the Sun, just like in real life. The grey speckles between Mars and Jupiter are the asteroid belt β€” each dot is a rock on its own orbit, and we keep a little space clear around Ceres so you can always see it. Switch to + Dwarf planets and you will also find the icy Kuiper Belt out past Neptune, with a clearing kept open around Pluto, Haumea and Makemake so they never get lost in the crowd. Sizes are drawn bigger than real life so you can see them β€” if they were to scale, Earth would be far too small to spot. Use Zoom in to make the worlds bigger and push their orbits further apart.
